What Causes Some Window Film to Fade and Turn Purple?

One of the questions we’re most commonly asked here at Meridian Window Tint is whether the window tint will fade or take on a purple hue once it has been installed. Our 3M window tint does not turn purple, but even if it did it would be fully covered by our warranty so you would have absolutely nothing to worry about.

What Causes Some Window Film to Fade or Turn Colors?

You may have noticed over the years that some tinted windows fade and turn purple in color. Not all window film will face this fate. Fading is more common with window film for auto and not common for architectural grade window tint, however, it can happen with non-3M brands.

There is no watertight conclusion as to why window film turns purple, but many experts have come to the conclusion that UV rays can cause a failure in the dye used by many window film manufacturers. This is most likely to happen if the dyes used to tint the film have been applied after the UV coating is applied. This is commonly the case in the production of cheaper window films, which is why it is always better to buy window film from a reputable source like Meridian Window Tint. We only use the highest quality window film to ensure the longevity of our products and services and offer a warranty to give you extra peace of mind. When window film comes with a warranty, you can bet that it has been manufactured to the highest standards, and is unlikely to turn purple, because it simply would not be economical for companies like ours to have to keep replacing faded and discolored window film, which is just one reason why we use high-quality materials, your satisfaction being the other.

Why Does Some Window Film Turn Purple?

Now you know that inferior manufacturing processes can lead to the discoloration of window film, but why is purple the most common color? Some experts suggest that window film most commonly turns purple because green and yellow dyes are far weaker than red and blue dyes, which remain far stronger for far longer. As you will know, red and blue combine to make purple, so when the dye bleeds through, it is often in the form of a purple discoloration.

Purchase Window Film from a Reliable Source

Window film is dyed so that the desired level of darkness can be achieved. However, cheaper companies will often dye over UV protection that is also a vital part of window film. Over time, UV rays will weaken and breakdown these dyes resulting in a purple appearance.

If you want to avoid purpling of your window films, you will need to buy high-quality coatings, preferably coatings which have been metalized and are thus more stable. We at Meridian Window Tint are:
