3M Privacy Window Film
Homes are a sanctuary of sorts. They are places where people retreat after a long, stressful day at work to unwind and enjoy quality time with loved ones. As such, privacy both during the day and night is a critical element in a residential space. However, achieving 100% privacy is not easy. There are pros and cons of putting window tint on your home windows that should be balanced depending on your specific needs.
When it comes to privacy window film, homeowners have different options such as decorative, solar or sun control (tint), privacy mirror, and blackout/whiteout/translucent (frosted appearance) films. Each type has distinct features translating to varying levels of privacy. Installing window film is one of the most convenient ways of increasing privacy in homes, and unlike blinds and curtains, window film requires little maintenance.
With window films, four main features affect the level of privacy you get. These are reflectivity, darkness, translucency, and opacity. Read on to find out more about these features and how they offer privacy.
1. Reflectivity and Darkness
For window films to deliver the desired privacy levels, the lighting conditions must be ideal. By design, window films prevent someone on the brighter side from seeing through. During the day, people outside the house will not be able to see inside since it is brighter outside due to the sunlight.
As such, residential privacy film is not effective at night when lighting conditions are reversed with the lights in your home turned on and darkness of dusk or night outside. However, by adding lighting fixtures outside that are more dominant than the light inside the house, the privacy offered by window film at night can be balanced out.
For homeowners who desire a 24-hour privacy solution, translucent films are a great option. These films have a frosted appearance and offer total privacy while still allowing natural light to enter the room. Someone outside may be able to see some light but not any objects or people inside. However, it should be noted that as a tradeoff, your view outside will also be obscured. This is a great solution for bathroom areas.
For areas of the house where you want ultimate privacy, consider opaque window films. These window films obscure views inside or outside completely. They are commonly used for blocking windows that you no longer want to use.
Window Film Offers a Variety of Benefits Beyond Privacy
There are many great options to consider when adding window film to your residential home. Window film is primarily touted for its privacy features, but it offers much more than that. It adds a security element to your house and safeguards the health of your loved ones, reduces energy costs, solves sun glare / brightness issues, and helps block damaging UV rays that would otherwise fade your carpet and furniture.
